Melanie Coffey

Melanie Coffey (she/her) is a Chicago-based playwright, screenwriter and filmmaker from Connecticut. She earned her Honors BFA in Film from Long Island University, Post in 2017 and an MFA from Northwestern University’s Writing for the Screen + Stage program in 2020. Her work has been performed, read, and/or screened in cities across the country, the UK and Canada. In 2023 her plays, To You & Me & the Ocean (SUNY Plattsburgh Climate Theater Festival), If This is the End (World Premiere, Theatre L’Acadie) and Today Tonight Soon (WP, Theatre L’Acadie) all went up as productions while her plays Time is a Color and the Color is Blue (Avalanche Theatre) and She Can Declare a Hurricane (Pocket Theatre VR) went up as readings. In 2024, her newest play Deserted was a part of Artemisia Theater’s Feminist Play Festival and Redtwist Theater’s Twisted Play Fest - both in Chicago. Time is a Color and the Color is Blue will have its world premiere production in May 2025 with Avalanche Theatre. When not writing, she is an ensemble member with two storefront Chicago theaters, is a member of the Dramatists Guild and the Playwrights’ Center and is a grant writer for Women Unite Chicago and CTVN.
